We all know the iconic denim on denim look worn by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake to the American Music Awards back in 2001 (pictured below). But what would that look like 17 years later, in 2018?
These days, denim on denim is hardly a fashion faux pas or a even a statement. When my younger sister comes home from High School, at least once a week I catch her in distressed jeans and a matching denim jacket. 'Sets' or matching tops and bottoms have been on trend for at least 3 years now and throwing in denim doesn't change a thing.

This look is a more current, and wearable, every day take on the iconic JT & Britney Spears look. You could definitely get away with wearing this to a brunch or day out around NYC, or even to the beach (sans necklace) since the bodysuit is actually a swimsuit!
Starting from the bottom going up, let's talk about the shoes. In real life I would slip on my Adidas Superstars and comfortably take on my day - but I couldn't resist shooting in these heels since they match the theme so well. I got these heels in 2008, which is why they fit that early 2000s teen Hollywood look so well; they're actually from that era! (shock-horror they still fit. jk not really I haven't grown since then...) The kitten heels match Britney Spears' strappy sandals and add a little sparkle to subtly mimic the intense bling that she was packing. Instead of an all denim maxi dress I went for a matching set including a denim mini skirt and a matching oversized distressed denim jacket from Zara. *Pro Tip: I bought the jacket in a size medium so it would look oversized!* Breaking a monochrome outfit down into two pieces makes it less intense and definitely more wearable. I included the white body to hug my figure like the corset top of Britney's dress. To top it all off I added my thick flower crystal choker that is very similar yet wearable due to the bronze setting that tones down the shine from the crystals. I would even say go ahead and add some drop crystal earrings to get a little closer to Britney's level of sparkle.
Who else thinks we're going to see another celeb pair recreate this look in 3 years for the 20 year anniversary!? I do!
