I wore this gorgeous Asian inspired faux silk dress to my AKΨ formal last semester and I decided I couldn't just let it sit in my closet until the next formal event - I needed to show it some more love. But some dresses are just a little too fancy for the dull grounds of my university campus. In order to wear it more often I would have to turn it down a notch and turn this night out number into a casual day look. I do this pretty often so that I can wear my some of my nicer pieces during the day, so I thought I would turn the idea into a little serial here on my blog and show you guys how to transform your looks from night to day or vice versa.
For this little number, we're going to take it from night to day since I originally bought it for a night out. I wore this dress to formal as picture, with a simple pair of black heels and my ohm necklace from my Nanie. Really simple and elegant as I think the dress speaks for itself. Oh and let me tell you, these shoes are a MUST HAVE. I bought them from Target for about $30 and these are the most comfortable heels ever. They're about 4.5in in height but they don't hurt in the slightest and I never have to take them off while dancing. And let me tell you, I rarely step off the dance floor at parties! The only draw back is that the ankle strap doesn't tighten very much if you have small ankles like me, but you can easily poke another hole in the material.
Now to make this dress wearable during the daytime, the first thing I did was add layers. It is still winter here in the Northeast and the warmest it gets is about 45°F, so layers are a necessity. I went for a grey turtleneck so that it wouldn't clash with the embroidery on the dress. This turtleneck is from J.Crew and I believe is cashmere...? Regardless it's super warm and soft and will keep in the heat. Then I layered a light blue distressed denim jacket to add to the casual feel. Distressed denim tends to do that. The light blue denim complements the light blue embroidery in the dress as well. Ideally I would probably take it further and add another puffer coat on top but it was sunny out that day and this sufficed. Obviously I won't be walking around campus with 4.5in heels so I slipped on my classic Adidas Superstars (which by the way are from the Kid's section and were $10 cheaper!!!). Finally I added a pair of faux round glasses from Urban Outfitters (I don't actually wear glasses/contacts) to add to the casual look. They are absolutely 80's chic and I love these glasses but they drive me crazy because they make it harder for me to see... Props to anyone who has to wear glasses, I can't even manage with fake ones haha.
Hope you guys enjoyed Volume 1., of my new little serial and I hope these are helpful to anyone who wants to make their wardrobe a little more versatile!
